The initiative in creating change has always been an integral aspect of man. Equipped with their relative skills and competencies, they engage in various efforts to create opportunities that will improve their capabilities and cater to the service of individuals. Amidst the trials and difficulties in the process, hard work and determination remains to be a vital factor in attaining their desired objectives and purpose in life. With this mindset, I wish to present my intention to apply at this prestigious institution to complete my MBA.
My parents have always been community oriented their whole life and have devoted much of their time reaching out and helping other people in our community. Naturally, I learned how to use my ability to help the others who are in need and how to interact with them readily and satisfactorily. My affirmative thoughts and incessant enthusiasm toward the other cultures greatly affected in learning and accepting the new cultures as well as helping those who are less fortunate in life. Thus, I was exposed to several unique experiences that I believe have had a positive impact on my upbringing.
Having spent the first 15 years of my life in Taiwan, I encountered several difficulties upon

One of the many wonderful concepts I have learned from my parents is to strive for academic excellence while balancing life with other activities and contributions. I am proud of my previous academic record at UC Irvine as well as my extracurricular involvement in campus activities, part-time employment and community service. Yet I feel that in order to reach my full potential I need to be in an environment that best caters to my interests and goals. I have learned from my parents two “laws”: the law of learning and the law of giving.
I believe the more you learn the more open you become for learning. I am convinced this University is a great fit for “the law of learning. ” That is why I believe that this move is a crucial step for me. My success and my accomplishments here will herald the beginning of the fulfillment of my personal and professional goals. It is said that the one thing that nobody can ever take away from you is your education and that is the one thing that I plan to not only gain for myself but for others as well.
I have learned from my parents the critical importance of the law of giving, and I am both attracted and committed to this model of community service, particularly that “students apply skills to effect social change. ” I bring to this campus a variety of assets and commitments. I have benefited from a multi-cultural mentoring program in high school. As an open-minded student, I believe I am able to contribute to not only the cultural diversity, but also the global views of the learning community.
My experience and perspective will greatly benefit those that I will be able to interact with on campus. I look forward to the rich academic and cultural experience that this fine University has to offer. While I personally believe that “there is no such thing as a free lunch” and that everything a person has in life must come from hard work and perseverance. There are those, however, who are unfortunate in life and therefore I believe that being fortunate in life I must make the most out of the opportunities that come my way. This has led me to a point in life that many people have not.
I have made a firm decision to recommit myself to pursuing my dreams. While there are those who believe that with an ounce of luck and a ton of persistence anything can be accomplished, I believe that there is no reason to expend so much energy and rely on luck. I believe in taking hold of my destiny and carving out a future for myself based on the decisions that I make in life. Life is simply too short and too precious to be left to luck alone. Essay Question 2 What experience has had the greatest impact on who you are today and why?
(500 words) In my youth, I have had to deal with a learning disorder (ADHD) and that made graduating from school a very challenging task. Being a student coping with ADHD, there are many times that I have just wanted to give up and move on to another task that seemed more rewarding. However, I have had other things to consider such as the fact that I also had another learning disability, clinical depression. This kept me focused and kept my eye on my ultimate goal which is to have a career in the business world.
I may not have had the drive to succeed but am also confident that I have the experience to do so. This had made me very proud because I overcame all of these struggles even if I had to deal with certain other problems that made them all the more difficult. This, however, has made me into the dedicated, hard-working and committed student that I am today. As such, I have come to a point in my life where I would like to take a firm role in determining my future and I believe that the UCLA Anderson MBA program is the perfect venue for me to achieve this dream.
Despite these challenges I am proud of my accomplishments in life. I have been an Assistant Development Manager which involved order processing and receiving order from American Importer companies like ACI, Dynasty to produce sample shoe for buyers like Wal-Mart, Kenneth Cole. I have also been a Project/team managing which dealt with managing the development team and time to reach deadline and importer’s demands. These experiences have shown just how much I have grown from my personal challenges and how I have sought ways by which to improve myself despite these challenges.
Admittedly, during my undergraduate studies, I was faced with a lot of personal and family setbacks which impacted negatively on my performance. However, I was able to put those problems behind me and completed my undergraduate degree with a very respectable grade point average. If anything, I feel that the narration of these experiences serves to substantiate my claim that I do realize what I need to do in life and what I aim to make of my career. Unlike most people, I genuinely believe that I have been fortunate to get these experiences and I know that I should make the most of this unique opportunity.
Essay Question 3 Discuss your short-term and long-term career goals. What is your motivation for pursuing an MBA now at UCLA Anderson? (750 words) The pursuit of one’s goals and dreams are journeys that oftentimes take a lifetime to accomplish. There are those who reach the end of their lives not accomplishing what they wanted to do because they were either too intimidated by the prospect of even embarking on such a quest or they did not have the right opportunities in life. I have been working for a number of years and during that time I have had plenty of time to see my career develop as my life passed by.
Yet, there comes a certain point in one’s life when one must make a firm decision, a commitment to something much more than one’s own personal goals. Oftentimes, this means sacrificing one for the other. There are those, however, who are lucky enough to have their own personal goals and that pursuit for higher objectives converge. This is why I have applied for this MBA at UCLA Anderson. As such, I realize that I have come to a point in life that many people have not.
This is why I have chosen to apply at this University to receive the education and training I need in order to achieve my career goals. My intended field of specialization is in business.
My main interest in this field lies in the field of business application and the principles that are involved. This has a way of showing how different policies are intertwined; such has policies in Healthcare regarding retirement benefits to how the world’s interest rate plays a role in our daily banking activities. Due to my foreign exposure, I have faith in the Asian market becoming more important to the world than ever and being one of the fastest growing financial markets in the world. Consequently, it is in need of a large number of finance professionals.
Given my Chinese cultural background and my experience working in the United States, it is my strong desire to act as a conduit to facilitate business activities between both countries. I realize, however, that in order to be prepared for this advanced education in my area of specialization I require the training and expertise that your fine academic institution can impart. There have been so many opportunities in life that I have not been able to take advantage of because of the competitiveness of the working environment. I believe that this experience and background of mine will help me pursue this dream.
Being in this field is only the beginning of a long journey for me. I realize that it will not be easy and I look forward to that challenge. In the short term, I see myself completing this degree and fulfilling the requirements for this course. I believe that this experience will be sufficient to prepare me for the next step which is applying for a good internship position that will give me the training that I need. I eventually plan to pursue larger goals such as taking a doctoral degree and perhaps starting my own business.
As the world continues to change and the workplace becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful career to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so. I am not saying that I do not have the training and expertise at the moment but I do believe that there is still room for more. The rich and diverse academic community at UCLA Anderson will definitely be the perfect place for me to learn and be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. It is said that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
I am one of those individuals who firmly believe in my dreams and am not afraid to work hard to attain them. I know that I have a long road to travel but I am neither daunted nor intimidated by this because I know that I can succeed. I am also confident in the fact that with the experiences that I can gain from this university there is so much more that I can accomplish in life and I look forward to the day that this dream becomes a reality. Essay Question 4 – 250 words * What does entrepreneurial spirit mean to you? * What global issue matters most to you and why? * What is something people will find surprising about you?
If there was anything that I gained from my work experience in Taiwan, it was that the key to success lies in developing one’s entrepreneurial spirit. This is illustrated by the Wal-Mart model which shows just how an entrepreneurial spirit can vault one into unprecedented heights. Expanding on the “buying cheap” concept, Wal-Mart has been successful in creating supply and demand on its own because of the immense volume of sales that Wal-Mart generates it is able to dictate where goods are to be manufactured in the world despite the fact that it is not a producer but simply a retail-chain.
For a retail chain to be able to dictate to suppliers where they are to produce their items in order to be able to sell to Wal-Mart at a lower cost means that the retail chain has either a huge stake in the ownership of the supplier or buys so much from the supplier that it is able to dictate the price that it is willing to buy at and by doing so dictate where such goods are to be produced. This is, in my humble opinion, the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit, being able to take challenges and turn them into opportunities much like Sam Walton has accomplish, much like I someday wish to achieve.
One of the greatest global issues that matter the most to me have to do with the economic depression the world is experiencing. On the local front, the economic problems that are plaguing the United States economy at the present are numerous to say the least. Since the collapse of the Housing market, the United States has experienced what some have come to call an economic recession. While it remains to be seen if the United States economy is really undergoing a recession at this point in time, this situation can be used as a great opportunity to point out the current struggles of the American economy.
My most important character strength, in my opinion, is my ability to adapt, accept and learn. My business acumen and knowledge is due to the fact that over the years, I have accomplished a number of things such as completing my MBA at the UCLA Anderson and also coming from a different cultural and social background. These experiences have provided me with a closer view of what I need to accomplish at an academic level before venturing into a business of my own, particularly in this highly competitive field. Essay Question 5 Are there any extenuating circumstances in your profile about which the Admissions Committee should be aware?
(250 words) As a student who is looking forward to bigger things in life, it is a critical period for me to make great difference in my life. This is why I am looking forward to applying for this position with this company since it will afford me the chance to have the training to be competitive in the global economy and at the same time the flexibility to be able to deal with the different cultures in the diverse business world. In the end, my dedication to upholding my positive ideas and values into a world which I deem this quality most essential is my foremost strength.
By sharing and obtaining knowledge, I am confident that the people at this prestigious medical institution will guide me to do that. I owe my unique viewpoints, life experiences and talents to my multicultural background. Due to this, I know how it feels to make adjustments and alternate plans. I am grateful for my work experience at the hospital and the tutoring program that I had with the students because not only was I exposed to people of different cultures, I was allowed to assist others, better myself and make critical decisions.
As such, I decided to pursue this MBA because I realize that this is an important bridge between me and society which is related to my future life. I believe there are a lot of professional courses at the UCLA Anderson that can educate me on the relationships between other fields and business. As such, I feel that this academic institution is the best place for me to not only learn about business but also how it affects actions in real life.
While I personally believe that “there is no such thing as a free lunch” and that everything a person has in life must come from hard work and perseverance, I also believe in charity. I believe in helping others who do not have much in life. I believe in helping people regardless of their nation, race or creed. I believe in being a better person so I can best help myself and others around me. This belief does not segregate between different cultures and that is the philosophy by which I live my life.
