Work-life conflict

Career counselors are now more in demand than ever due to the very stressful life that adults and career professionals are facing. Duxbury, Higgins and Coghill (2003) presented us with a very informative research on the actual experiences of these professionals. An important implication of this work is that for professionals, this work can aid counselors in addressing the issue of an adult as a person including his/her social relationships and as a career professional in lieu with the organization and its structure.

It is important to note that helping professionals would need to consider that personal and career choices are very stressful for most adults. For most, the ability to segregate both is a challenge. However, most career counselors and general counselors in aid of these studies can exploit the possibilities of further integrating their work with empirical researches in order to provide a simpler yet workable time management and life management plan for Canadians.

The article’s primary strength is the very nature of its objectives- providing an empirical assessment using a vast number of Canadian workers. Hence, the article was able to convincingly back up its statements and generalizations. Moreover, Duxbury, Higgins and Coghill (2003) was able to validate existing

theoretical claims and studies indicating there is a link between work life balance among Canadian citizens and their personal development and lifestyles.

Consequently, while the study has contributed in the existing empirical literature by providing a concise and comprehensive article, it failed to link these issues to the theoretical problems particularly lacking in reference to most theoretical works. While the authors sought to diverge from existing theoretical works by presenting real sentiments of adults, it could have contributed more to the literature if it provided a theoretical or a conceptual framework in the study. Conclusion

An important consideration in addressing work-life balance is the ability of organizations to aid adults in having a venue for more flexible working hours. Adult workers need to solidify their personal and character development in order to withstand the stress of work and social life. For instance, factors such as culture and the psychosocial development of adults play a very important part in developing the personality of adults and manage their time and balance their life priorities. An important theme in this is the ability of the adults to work on their priorities and plan their careers and family lives.

Moreover, personality and culture plays a critical role- Canadians are generally both family and work oriented- social orientation in the country emphasizes not only the financial stability of families but also their ability to provide a happy family. While it is true that one cannot have it all, particularly for adults who are swamped with responsibilities, one can balance their work and life depending on their ability to develop attitudes and behaviors that will show resilience to stress and the skills to manage their time, set priorities and search for the purpose of their actions.

These are essential skills that must be developed by adults in order to succeed in all spheres of their lives.
