Video is still catching up. Flickr (Yahoo! ) however is providing Picasa (Google) with fierce competition being more popular with users as a photo sharing service. Up until the year 2000, Yahoo! had little competition in E-mail services; however, with the arrival of Gmail (Google) offering its customers large storage spaces, Y! mail encountered e-mail melee with Gmail. However, in terms of online chat and instant messaging services, Yahoo! still continues to be more popular with its multi-feature Y! Messenger offering various chat and VOIP services. Google continues to develop Gtalk with video applets still in its beta version.

Google Maps have surpassed its rivals with Google Earth and an inclining majority of customers availing its services; whilst Yahoo Games have reached new heights in online gaming. Google has taken concrete steps in the advertisement field with Adwords (Adsense) and it is said that 99% of Google’s revenue are derived from its advertising programs [2]. Reports claim that Of Google’s total revenue, $1. 63 billion came only from AdWords; roughly $300 million more than all of the different types of online advertising that Yahoo sells [1]. The list of features and services is endless.

However, if the two giants have to be compared to determine the leading internet brand, an analysis of their financial income and earnings report has to be performed. A (third) quarterly report prepared on the revenues earned by both companies read that revenues earned by Google, were $2. 69 billion for Q3 2006, an increase of 70% compared to the third quarter of 2005 and an increase of 10% compared to the second quarter of 2006. On the other hand, for Yahoo, Revenues were $1. 58 billion for the third quarter of 2006, a 19 percent increase compared to $1. 33 Billion for the same period of 2005 [2].

Section 2 Platforms, Policies and Culture The hardware details of either company have not been divulged, however, it is common knowledge that Google runs its services on several servers, each comprising thousands of low-cost commodity computers running stripped-down versions of Linux. Yahoo on the other hand has refused to provide any concrete details on its hardware platform. In terms of company policy, culture, employee relations and growth, Google has been widely popular in the corporate world, being identified multiple times as Fortune Magazine’s #1 Best Place to Work.

Yahoo! on the other hand has also been recognized crucially; though criticism being offered towards its involvement with spyware, adware and shark-finning companies have notched its popularity down in the environmentalism and cultural growth ladder.
